Emmie's story reflects a common experience among adults with I/DD, intellectual and developmental disabilities. In her early thirties, Emmie experienced a sudden change in her living situation and she was admitted to a nursing home to avoid homelessness. Sadly, she spent several years in this environment with no one to advocate for her and was not presented with any alternatives or community-based support. Emmie's situation highlights the lack of advocacy and resources available for individuals like her. It is Emmie's goal to help others with I/DD to achieve the same amazing success she has been able to accomplish.
